Once upon a time, the Taal Volcano was a large volcano, in fact was one of the largest volcanoes in the world, towering 18,000 feet up in the sky. Now, it is the world’s smallest active volcano, only about 700 meters high.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Since 1572, the volcano has 33 recorded eruptions, the most devastating eruption occurred in the year 1911. The most recent volcanic activity happened in 1977, although the volcano has remained quiet since. It is still not safe, for signs of increased activity appeared in 1991, 1992, 1994, and most recently, in June of 2009.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">When you visit Taal Volcano, make sure to bring water, hats and plenty of sun screen lotion. Wear light clothes for it can get very hot, it being located in a tropical country. It is most recommended you get a head start early in the morning. You can either take a hike or ride on horseback to go up the ridge and see the beautiful Crater Lake.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">From Manila, you can travel by land to Tagaytay, passing through panoramic views of the countryside. Afterwards, you take a zigzag road to the Town of Talisay. To get to Taal Volcano and Taal Lake, you can take a half hour boat ride in any town located on the shores of Taal Lake. The most popular point is in Talisay. However, if you prefer less crowded areas and cheaper rates, you can go to more remote towns like San Nicolas.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago, particularly in the islands of Bohol Island, Samar Island, Leyte Island and Mindanao. It is a member of the approximately 45 million year old family Tarsiidae, whose name is derived from its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Its geographic range also includes Maripipi Island, Siargao Island, Basilan Island and Dinagat Island. Tarsiers have also been reported in Sarangani, although they may be different subspecies.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Philippine Tarsier is not a large animal; it measures only about 85 to 160 millimetres (3.35 to 6.30 in) in height, making it one of the smallest primates. The small size makes it difficult to spot. The mass for males is between 80–160 g (2.8–5.6 oz), usually lighter for females, somewhat heavier than other Tarsius such as the Pygmy Tarsier. The average adult is about the size of a human fist and will fit very comfortably in the human hand. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Like all tarsiers, the Philippine Tarsier's eyes are fixed in its skull; they cannot turn in their sockets. Instead, a special adaptation in the neck allows its round head to be rotated 180 degrees. The eyes are disproportionately large, having the largest eye-to-body size ratio of all mammals. These huge eyes provide this nocturnal animal with excellent night vision. The large membranous ears are mobile, appearing to be almost constantly moving, allowing the tarsier to hear any movement.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Habitat</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Philippine Tarsier's habitat is the second growth, secondary forest, and primary forest from sea level to 700 m (2,300 ft). Its habitat also includes tropical rainforest with dense vegetation and trees that offer it protection like tall grasses, bushes and bamboo shoots. It prefers dense, low-level vegetation in secondary forests, with perching sites averaging 2 meters above the ground.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Home range</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Early studies showed that the Philippine Tarsier has a home range of 1 to 2 hectares, but more recent research shows that home ranges averaged 6.45 hectares for males and 2.45 hectares for females (MCP and Kernel 95%), allowing for a density of 16 male and 41 female tarsiers per 100 ha.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Research findings also show that while both male and female tarsiers are solitary animals, they cross each other's paths under the cover of nightfall as they hunt for prey. They travel up to one and a half kilometres across the forest and the optimal area is more than six hectares.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ecosystem roles</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Besides human hunters, feral cats banished from nearby communities are the species' main predators, though some large birds are known to prey on it as well. Because of its nocturnal and arboreal habits, the Philippine Tarsier is most likely to fall prey to owls, or to small carnivores which it can encounter in its canopy homes.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Feeding ecology</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Philippine Tarsier is amberous. Primarily insectivorous, its diet consists of live insects and it has also been observed to feed on spiders, small crustaceans, and small vertebrates such as small lizards and birds. Tarsius syrichta preys on live insects, particularly crickets and grasshoppers. Upon seizing its prey, the tarsier carries it to its mouth using both hands.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">As predators, the Philippine Tarsier may help to structure insect communities. To the extent that it is preyed upon by other animals, it may impact predator populations.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Behavior</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Philippine Tarsier is a shy nocturnal animal that leads a mostly hidden life, asleep during the day and only active to look for food during the night. During the day, it sleeps in dark hollows close to the ground, near the trunks of trees and shrubs deep in the impenetrable bushes and forests. They only become active at night, and even then, with their much better sight and amazing ability to maneuver around trees, are very well able to avoid humans.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">It is arboreal and is a vertical clinger and leaper, habitually clinging vertically to trees and are capable of leaping from branch to branch.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Philippine Tarsier is solitary. However, it is found to have either monogamous or polygamous mating system.</div>Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264615160613418095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7878205513365667954.post-73179018659516070472011-08-03T20:17:00.000-07:002011-08-03T20:17:55.002-07:00Mayon Volcano<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTOE0Ti_-ULkIjH0Fr1Bx0TjIHAMbej8WnlkbkgfdVbcEzpDqpImB8z02UCcs2nhcHfjrtfVOQffww1aju9ZkE-BM3YnySvPEltPbksHsSfk2rnB-oAMINa4w7kOfEO3Y7wkBJRg5N44xD/s1600/mayon-volcano.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="222" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTOE0Ti_-ULkIjH0Fr1Bx0TjIHAMbej8WnlkbkgfdVbcEzpDqpImB8z02UCcs2nhcHfjrtfVOQffww1aju9ZkE-BM3YnySvPEltPbksHsSfk2rnB-oAMINa4w7kOfEO3Y7wkBJRg5N44xD/s320/mayon-volcano.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mayon Volcano has a worldwide reputation as the most perfectly formed volcano in the world because of its near-perfect conical shape and form. Mayon Volcano is the champion among the best competitors for the world's most perfectly coned volcanoes like Osorno Volcano of Chile, Mount Fuji of Japan, Mount Taranaki of New Zealand, Mount Cotopaxi of Ecuador, Volcan Arenal of Costa Rica and Shishaldin Volcano of Alaska, USA. Because of its natural elegance and beauty, it is listed on the World's Top 10 Wonders of Nature. Visitors traveling to Mayon Volcano from Manila would take an hour by plane getting to Legazpi City then 10 miles north of Legazpi city is the magnificent Mayon Volcano, the most popular landmark of the province of Albay, Philippines. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Geomorphology</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mayon Volcano is an active stratovolcano. The current cone was formed through pyroclastic and lava flows from past eruptions. Mayon is the most active of the active volcanoes in the Philippines, having erupted over 49 times in the past 400 years.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Like other volcanoes located around the ring of the Pacific Ocean, Mayon is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is located on the eastern side of Luzon, beside the Philippine Trench which is the convergent boundary where the Philippine Sea Plate is driven under the Philippine Mobile Belt. Where a continental plate or belt of continental fragments meets an oceanic plate, the lighter continental material overrides the oceanic plate, forcing it down into the Earth's mantle. Magma may be forced through weaknesses in the continental crust caused by the collision of the tectonic plates. One such exit point is Mayon.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mayon Volcano is the main landmark of Albay Province, Philippines. It is 10 kilometres (6 mi) from the Gulf of Albay, in the cities and municipalities of Legazpi City, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Ligao City, Tabaco City, Malilipot, and Santo Domingo (clockwise from Legazpi). It rises 2462 m (8,077 ft) above the gulf.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mayon Volcano is the Philippines' most active volcano and is considered to be the world's most perfectly formed volcano for its symmetrical cone. It is a basaltic-andesitic volcano. The upper slopes of the volcano are steep averaging 35-40 degrees and are capped by a small summit crater. Its sides are layers of lava and other volcanic material.</div>Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264615160613418095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7878205513365667954.post-41428820391381503642011-08-03T20:14:00.000-07:002011-08-03T20:15:59.629-07:00Chocolate Hills in Bohol<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5vnPPOmieU8rq0j_Ic2D3ZI7sxVT1x_5YBT7Yefi0jOf-NA0VSrOqOuv32aqu2LtXmAKjD35alDB3Y_cHClQY1gH1ck4iMBup03fF1r66my8Gde4-9-Pomz-FEtAv5lU4aEZYjs22ftNp/s1600/chocollate-hills.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5vnPPOmieU8rq0j_Ic2D3ZI7sxVT1x_5YBT7Yefi0jOf-NA0VSrOqOuv32aqu2LtXmAKjD35alDB3Y_cHClQY1gH1ck4iMBup03fF1r66my8Gde4-9-Pomz-FEtAv5lU4aEZYjs22ftNp/s320/chocollate-hills.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are a spectacular natural wonder in the Philippines. It consists of nearly 1800 small cute little hills that are spread over an area of 20 square miles. The hills are located in 3 towns of Bohol namely Carmen, Batuan and Sagbayan. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Chocolate Hills placed Bohol on the tourist map long before the beautiful white beaches of the island became major tourist destinations. The most famous and signature tourist attraction of Bohol, it is a prime tourist destination in the Philippines. This is because the Chocolate Hills are incomparable and is one of the country's most spectacular sceneries. Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who admits that she is the No. 1 tourist of Bohol for having visited the province so many times, said: "Bohol is a major tourist province. The fame of the Chocolate Hills is not only known in the country but worldwide." The national government has chosen the Chocolate Hills as one of its "flagship tourist destinations".</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Of the 1,247 hills, two have been developed into resorts for tourism. The original resort is located in Carmen, Bohol located in Barangay Buenos Aires, only a few minutes drive from downtown Carmen. The resort in Carmen is called Chocolate Hills Complex. The more recent one in Sagbayan is called Sagbayan Peak.</div><a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The original viewing station of the Chocolate Hills is a government-owned and operated resort called "Chocolate Hills Complex" located in Carmen, Bohol, about 55 kilometres (34 mi) from Tagbilaran City and about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from the town proper of Carmen, Bohol.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Chocolate Hills Complex has a restaurant, hostel with swimming pool and an observation deck where one could view and even count the hills at the view deck 210 feet (64 m) above the ground. There are a total of 214 steps leading to the observation or view deck. Here one can view the landscape that is covered with more than a thousand Chocolate Hills. The Chocolate Hills Complex is composed of two hills developed into a resort. An observation deck on the higher hill offers a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding area.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The other way to view the Chocolate Hills is at "Sagbayan Peak", a mountain resort in Sagbayan town, about 75 kilometres (47 mi) northwest of Tagbilaran City. Viewing is made from the deck of an elevated ridge that provides an unobstructed view of the Chocolate Hills as well as the sea off Cebu City. This is only 18 kilometres (11 mi) from the Chocolate Hills complex in neighboring Carmen town.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sagbayan Peak is a 5-hectare (12-acre) mountaintop resort and recreation center. Its viewing deck offers a 360-degree perspective of the Chocolate Hills plus the blue sea that separates Bohol and Cebu. The peak now has a restaurant and a children’s park with Bugs Bunny, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and various other Toontown figures. Aside from the function hall and viewing deck, a hotel, swimming pool, driving range, a butterfly dome and a tarsier sanctuary are planned. A 100-hectare (250-acre) golf course is also planned.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Patria Aurora Roa, tourism director for Central Visayas, was happy to see the latest addition to Bohol's tourist attractions. This was echoed by Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado, who said: "The Sagbayan Peak is a welcome note for Bohol tourism."</div>Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264615160613418095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7878205513365667954.post-42484701061889039862011-08-03T20:11:00.000-07:002011-08-03T20:11:20.274-07:00Puerto Princesa Subterranean Rive<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEHOTieIsfcAYVW3vBO0b_KLpktUOgOXpYx0tQ0pdUzyShSTRcEIufC5vazYqFXui6vc3HWSoFd04M4N5LPnk9JviVS8PCSlpgwLdtwh0s_yOuQXjfA3CPbc0AoFY3XJng6jlycvaRepSS/s1600/subterranean-river.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEHOTieIsfcAYVW3vBO0b_KLpktUOgOXpYx0tQ0pdUzyShSTRcEIufC5vazYqFXui6vc3HWSoFd04M4N5LPnk9JviVS8PCSlpgwLdtwh0s_yOuQXjfA3CPbc0AoFY3XJng6jlycvaRepSS/s320/subterranean-river.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River is one of the world's longest underground river and the previous record holder of the longest underground river in the whole world. Of the 252 bird species known to occur in Palawan, a total of 165 species of birds were recorded in the park. This represents 67% of the total birds and all of the 15 endemic bird species of Palawan. Notable species seen in the park are the blue-naped parrot (Tanygnathus lucionensis), Tabon scrub fowl (Megapodius cumunigii), hill myna (Gracula religiosa), Palawan hornbill (Anthracoceros marchei), white breasted sea eagle (Halitutus leucogates ).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">There are also some 30 mammal species that have been recorded (Madulid, 1998). Most often observed in the forest canopy and along the shoreline feeding during low tide is the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis), the only primate found in the area. Other mammal species in the park are the bearded pig (Sus barbatus), bearcat (Arctictis binturong), Palawan stink badger (Mydaus marchei) and the Palawan porcupine (Hystrix pumilus)</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">19 species of reptiles have been identified, eight of which are endemic (Madulid, 1998). Common species in the area include large predators like the common reticulated python (Phython reticulatus), the monitor lizard (Varanus salvator) and the green crested lizard (Bronchocoela cristatella). Amphibian fauna include ten species. The Philippine woodland frog (Rana acanthi) is the most dominant and frequently encountered. One species, Barbourula busuangensis, endemic to Palawan was also observed in the area.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Notable are the nine species of bats, two species of swiftlets and whip spider (Stygophrynus sp.) found in the cave, and the sea cow (Dugong dugon) and the hawksbill sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) that feed in the coastal area of the park.</div>Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264615160613418095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7878205513365667954.post-52837523220330592982011-08-03T20:09:00.000-07:002011-08-03T20:09:05.971-07:00Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyjdKdye2KkKEJSk3A5J0ecPwrikBdtcv3Ho7MpAHJnESmt6euODxnepr02TfgE7ZtLPC6oDDwfY6tSLuykWqfxyGnwONlDmQ742j7pzBy3EKZLVAlgVFtQtRkUppk-1V4c1WVgrN2vsga/s1600/Tubbataha-Reef-Marine-Park.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyjdKdye2KkKEJSk3A5J0ecPwrikBdtcv3Ho7MpAHJnESmt6euODxnepr02TfgE7ZtLPC6oDDwfY6tSLuykWqfxyGnwONlDmQ742j7pzBy3EKZLVAlgVFtQtRkUppk-1V4c1WVgrN2vsga/s320/Tubbataha-Reef-Marine-Park.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Tubbataha Reefs National Marine Park is a sanctuary (government-protected conservation area) consisting of over 1000 species of marine creatures and birds. The Reef is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the most popular Philippine diving site for tourists. The Tubbataha Reef has two coral reef atolls, the North and South Atoll. The Park can be reached via boat travel of 10 to 12 hours which is about 112 miles from Puerto Princesa city, the capital of Palawan province.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Conservation</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Tubbataha National Marine Park, located at the Central Sulu Sea, is a marine sanctuary containing a reef of enormous size. It was established on August 11, 1988 with an area of 332 km² (82,000 acres). In 2006, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, through an Executive Order, increased the boundaries of the park by 200%. It is now 968.24 km² (239,000 acres) in size and is guarded by armed rangers 24 hours/ 7 days a week.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"></div><a name='more'></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">Declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in December 1993, it is under protective management by the Philippines Department of National Defense (DND). It is under technical supervision by the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD) & the Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR). It is administered as part of Cagayancillo town on Palawan. It is also nominated in the new 7 wonders of nature.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Tourism</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Tubbataha National Marine Park is open to live-aboard diving excursions between the months of April to June. It is in this period where the waves are most calm. As of March 2011, the park entrance fee is pegged at USD $75.00 or PHP 3,000.00. Due to global warming, it is advised that divers book their trips towards the middle or end of April as the waves are still strong and may cause problems for dive excursions and underwater visibility.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Although the sand bars around Tubbataha are considered off limits to human beings, tourists are allowed to set foot at the Ranger Station where they can purchase souvenirs and tour the facility.</div>Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264615160613418095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7878205513365667954.post-65076375784547953132011-08-02T18:45:00.000-07:002011-08-08T02:54:29.505-07:00Bohol (Island the Island Paradise in the Philippines)<div style="text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Cebu City is the centre of a metropolitan area called Metro Cebu, which includes the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu and Talisay. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located in Lapu-Lapu City is only a twenty-minute drive away from Cebu City. To the northeast of the city are Mandaue City and the town of Consolacion, to the west are Toledo City, the towns of Balamban and Asturias, to the south are Talisay City and the town of Minglanilla. Across Mactan Strait to the east is Mactan Island where Lapu-Lapu City and an aquarium attraction are located.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">About an hour’s flight away from Manila is Cebu. It is an island in central Philippines with Cebu City as its capital. The island is long and thin with a few smaller islands off-shore. The airport is located on the flat island of Mactan which is separated from the main island by the narrow Mactan Channel. Cebu City is one of the main centres of commerce, trade and industry in the Visayas and Mindanao region of the country. Because of this and other important aspects that Cebu City was given the moniker Queen City of the South.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

</div><div style="text-align: justify;">For local and foreign tourist, there are many places of interest in Cebu. One is “Magellan's Cross” which was named after Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer who came to Cebu in the early 1500s. Pieces of the original cross are believed to be encased in the present cross. The monument is just across the street from the Sto. Niño Basilica in downtown Cebu City. It used to be the only Catholic Basilica in East Asia. The basilica houses the famous “Santo Niño” the patron saint of the Cebuanos.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><b>Banaue Rice Terraces </b></td></tr>
</tbody></table><div style="text-align: justify;">Banaue Rice Terraces (Hagdan-hagdang Palayan ng Banawe) in Banaue, Ifugao are considered to be the Eighth Wonder of the World. The terraces are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Approximately during the ministry of Jesus Christ on earth (over 2000 years ago), the native people of Ifugao began carving the terraces of the mountains using merely their bare hands and sticks from the trees in the forests. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The terraces were carved mainly to provide an area of land suitable for planting rice which is the staple food of most Filipinos whether breakfast, lunch or dinner, rice is always served and eaten with the main dish. The rainforests above the mountains act as a natural irrigation system used to water the rice plants. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">This is considered to be one of the greatest engineering feats of mankind, because if each one were connected end to end, then they would reach halfway across the globe or be 10 times as long as the Great Wall of China.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The rice terraces are like stepping stones stretching towards the sky, where some of them reach almost 5,000 feet in altitude and cover about 4,000 square miles of land. They are now beginning to show signs that they are eroding, and some of them need maintenance, while the Ifugaos’ new generation is migrating to nearby cities in search of better opportunities.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The terraces are 7 hours of travel by car (50 miles) from Baguio city, the summer capital of the Philippines. Travelling from Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, it would take a total of 12 hours to reach the terraces, a distance of about 205 miles.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Ifugao Rice Culture</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The terraces are vastly found in the province of Ifugao and the Ifugao people have been its caretakers. Ifugao culture revolves around rice and the culture displays an elaborate array of rice culture feasts linked with agricultural rites from rice cultivation to rice consumption. Harvest season generally calls for thanksgiving feasts while the concluding harvest rites tungo or tungul (the day of rest) entail a strict taboo of any agricultural work. Partaking of the bayah (rice beer), rice cakes, and betel nut constitutes an indelible practice during the festivities and ritual activities.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">The Ifugao people practice traditional farming spending most of their labor at their terraces and forest lands while occasionally tending to root crop cultivation. The Ifugaos have also been known to culture edible shells, fruit trees, and other vegetables which has been exhibited among Ifugaos for generations. The building of the rice terraces, work of blanketing walls with stones and earth which is designed to draw water from a main irrigation canal above the terrace clusters. Indigenous rice terracing technologies have been identified with the Ifugao’s rice terraces such as their knowledge of water irrigation, stonework, earthwork and terrace maintenance. As their source of life and art, the rice terraces have sustained and shaped the lives of the community members. Ifugao previously belong to the Mountain Province as a municipality but on June 18, 1966 in effect of Republic Act No. 4695, Ifugao became an independent province.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Organic Farming</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">In March 2009 the Ifugao rice terraces were declared free from Genetically Modified Organism (GMO). An event was organized in Dianara Viewpoint for this announcement where it was graced by Gov. Teodoro Baguilat, Mayor Lino Madchiw, Greenpeace campaigner for Southeast Asia Daniel Ocampo, and Cathy Untalan who was executive director of the Miss Earth Foundation. Before the announcement ceremonies, 3 Mumbakis performed an Alim, a tribal ritual to ask for blessings where an animal is offered to the gods.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><b>Tourism</b></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Another thriving economy in the Banaue Rice Terraces is tourism. The Tourism industry has developed a number of activities for visitors which may include the traditional sight seeing of the terraces and visits to the tribes at the foot of the terraces. A Mumbaki (traditional Ifugao witch doctor) is also recommended to visitors, these doctors can perform spiritual healing rituals Domestic tourism however has gone down over the past few years. A contributing factor to this is the treatment of domestic tourists by the local guides in the area where it has been reported that local guides are more willing to entertain foreign visitors. The Batad Environmental Tour Guides Association (BETGA) in association with the Batad Baranguay authorities are currently laying a concrete track down from the Batad Saddle to the village proper.</div>Adminhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15264615160613418095noreply@blogger.com0
